John Edwards: Americans Should 'Sacrifice' SUVs for Environment

Full story here.

Edwards was asked during his appearance how he explained the contradiction of asking Americans to sacrifice while he's living in a 28,000-square-foot (2,600-square-meter) mansion.

He said he came from nothing, worked hard all his life, has always supported workers and fought big corporations as a lawyer.

"I have no apologies whatsoever for what I've done with my life," he said to loud cheers. "My entire life has been about the same cause, which is making sure wherever you come from, whatever your family is, whatever the color of your skin, you get a real chance to do something great in this country."

First, oh, the hypocrisy and contradiction! John's sounding much like the bloated Al Gore.

Second, the free market has to dictate change. Reprimands from senators with sprawling homes, multiple cars, and enormous overall consumption aren't effective.

Third, China will soon surpass us as the world's worst polluter if they haven't already. They've become very adept at pumping out CO2 and not reporting on the relative data. Let's share some of the environmental burden already! (John complains about our 1st-place status as biggest polluter in the full story.)

Fourth, 28,000-square-foot mansion, John? The recreation building--adjacent to the "home"--contains a basketball court, a squash court, two stages, a bedroom, kitchen, bathrooms, swimming pool, a four-story tower, and a room called "John's Lounge."

You hardly understand the meaning of sacrifice, buddy. Perhaps you used to, but nobody buys it any more. Even John D. Rockefeller--with a net worth that dwarfs yours--consumed a fraction of what you do (and what his millionaire contemporaries did)! It's all what you put value on, John.

Finally, who cares if you came from nothing? That matters little here. Many people--including me--came from less-than-loaded origins. But, I was taught by down-to-earth parents to not be bossy or an hypocritical imbecile.

What are you willing to sacrifice, Edwards? Willing to trim your mansion in half to 14,000 square feet? That's, at least, a start.
