Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards said if he isn’t elected president, the population of African-American males is likely to either wind up in prison or dead.
At an MTV/MySpace.com forum Thursday, Edwards responded to a question about inner-city kids partaking in violence by saying there was no “silver bullet” to fight the problem. Click here to watch the video.
“We start with the president of the United States saying to America, ‘we cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem. And the idea that we can keep incarcerating and keep incarcerating — pretty soon we’re not going to have a young African-American male population in America. They’re all going to be in prison or dead. One of the two.”
No silver bullet? Of course, it's a complex problem. A single silver bullet does not exist; yet, addressing the situation from the inside (families) out is the only way for long-term progress.
"They're all going to be in prison or dead?" A Republican would get killed by the media for such a statement.
Mitt has commented in the past about the importance of families, and of having children only when a little older and married. Many of the problems facing African-American males (and other broken-home scenarios) would be significantly reduced with a stronger home framework. Edwards only bashes the president, sidestepping the challenge of presenting any real solutions himself.
