Fred Thompson to Be Hit on Immigration

David Brody at CBN provides some conservative-angering facts on Fred Dalton Thompson (FDT).

The most stark example was his 1995 vote on the welfare overhaul, when he voted to preserve illegal aliens' ability to receive federal benefits. He was one of just six senators to vote that way, joining four other Republicans and one Democrat.

And in 1996, as Congress considered a crackdown on illegal aliens, Mr. Thompson voted against setting up a system so employers could verify the legal status of their workers.

In contrast, Mitt will enforce our immigration laws (Townhall.com piece by Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX). Some examples include:

In 2006, he signed an agreement with the federal government to deputize Massachusetts State Troopers so they could help enforce immigration laws.

He authorized Massachusetts National Guardsmen to deploy to the Southern Border. In 2004, Governor Romney vetoed a plan that would have provided illegal immigrants the same in-state tuition at public colleges and universities as Massachusetts citizens.

In 2003, he announced his opposition to efforts to give drivers' licenses to illegal immigrants, again upholding the rule of law. "Those who are here illegally should not receive tacit support from our government that gives an indication of legitimacy," he said at the time. He also insisted upon teaching our kids in English.

Fred has another issue on which he will (and should) take a beating.
