More Departures For Thompson Team

Hugh Hewitt led me to this story from yesterday.

On the eve of his big day, Fred Thompson has let another staffer go.

Jim Mills, the former Fox News producer who joined the campaign only weeks ago, has resigned due to "strategic differences." This from campaign manager Bill Lacy in a memo to the staff, sent out Tuesday "just before we begin the Big Dance."

Mills, who was hired away from Fox in July, is the latest to depart Thompson's operation, which has been hit by one resignation after another as the candidate retooled his senior staff over the summer. Linda Rozett was hired away from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to serve as the communications director, only to leave after Lacy replaced former manager Tom Collamore. Harris replaced Rozett.

More turmoil and turnover. Can't imagine what his administration would look like.

Another note about Thompson by Hugh yesterday:

The Washington Times throws a hard right at Senator Thompson with this headline: "Thompson soft on illegals in Senate votes." Key graph:

Some [Thompson] votes are likely to draw scrutiny, particularly a series of votes in the 1990s against cracking down on illegal aliens. Those include a 1995 vote against limiting services other than emergency care and public education to illegal aliens — he was one of just six senators to oppose that proposal — and a 1996 vote against creating an employer verification system to help businesses filter out illegal aliens who apply for jobs.

There's not much chance Jay Leno will ask him about the story or the votes, which may be why he's across the continent from the debate.

Fred's delaying the inevitable: facing the reality of his record.
