Thanks to John Cronin at Elect Romney in 2008 for this bit of news. Russert wanted Huckabee to come on his show next week, but Huckabee declined, saying he needed at least two weeks to prepare. Since the Iowa caucus was the third available week, that would be too late. Hence, there is no possible way Huckabee would be able to face off with Russert.
Huckabee fears an open dialogue about the issues? Clemency Huck doesn't want his record to be probed on prime time? Are you shocked?
Due to Huckabee's unwillingness, Russert offered the spot to Ron Paul, who accepted.
Frankly, I think Huckabee made the best choice out of a no-win situation. Choice 1: Go head to head with Russert and be obliterated on your record and the issues just two weeks before Iowa. Choice 2: Give one more example of your cowardice and lack of depth by declining, then spam adds all over Iowa and SC w/a cross in the background. You may be a weeny, but at least your not Mormon, right?
