SC Mitt Blogger: Just Got Called by Huckabee for Pres here in South Carolina

About an hour ago, I received an email from a Mitt Blogger in SC. Here's the email detailing his conversation with the loose-with-the-truth Huck supporter:

I just got a call on my cell phone from an intern or volunteer for the Huckabee campaign. Having made many of these calls myself, I was paying close attention to how the caller handled himself. I never identified myself as a Romney supporter and ended up keeping him on the line for about 15 minutes (all the fewer calls to make to others). The caller was a little nervous and uncomfortable with trying to answer some of my questions and repeated fell back to his line about character, running a clean campaign, and that Huckabee was a true conservative.

Here are the details from the call:

Shortly after explaining he was calling for Mike Huckabee, he started to lay into Romney for his “dishonest” attacks against Huckabee. I decided to see what his response was to some of the research I had done on his guy. Here are some of the responses I got.

Raising Taxes: He had to do it because he was constitutionally bound—otherwise vital government services would have to be cut.

Increased Spending: Huckabee only had control over 10% of the budget process. Using this argument, he said that Huckabee’s increase in 11 years was actually less than Romney’s increase in fees in four years. I had to stop him here. I asked how it was possible that a 250 million increase in fees could be more than the 10 billion increase in Arkansas spending—which had to be covered by various taxes. This is where he explained the whole 10% thing saying basically that the Huckster shouldn’t have to answer for 90% of his record for spending.

Immigration: He said that Huckabee never backed Scholarships or Tuition breaks for illegals (though we know he did, even though the bills were dropped before getting to a vote)—but only for American Citizens who were descendants of illegals. He also said they had to meet higher requirements to receive these scholarships.

The “Negative Ad” Press Conference: He said that he was personally glad that Huckabee didn’t “go negative” even though Romney was running such a dirty campaign. He was upset that Romney had distorted Huckabee’s record with lies and distortions.

He directed many of my questions to the Huckabee website “Fact Check” page which is short on facts and big on spin. I tried to be very nice and complemented him on his dedication to his campaign and the political process. Hopefully they will call me back as we get closer to the SC primary.

Funny thing was they called my home phone about 5 minutes later and asked for my wife. Since she would have been the next one on the list alphabetically, I’ll bet he spent those 5 minutes in between trying to come up with better information for the challenges I presented him with.
Sincerely,

Huck and his cronies are distorting the truth. What a surprise!
