I'm convinced that the MSM, the GOP establishment, and anti-Mormonism combined to take Romney out. He was always the biggest target from day one. The Mormon factor was always listed in every article about him, but not his spectacular resume or record. The flip-flop charge was too, and nary a mention of all the flip-flops of both Huckabee and McCain who both actually have more! I don't think there's any doubt that Romney was by far the most conservative, excepting Fred. His rhetoric as a candidate was suspect, but his record as governor was straight-up conservative. McCain and Huck's records simply are not, it's not even arguable when you look at the actual facts.from Pam, a reader response on Brody File

Mormons learned a hard lesson from the presidential campaign of Mitt Romney. The message Southern Evangelicals made loud and clear was "you are not welcome." Despite sharing substantially similar values, Mormons and Evangelicals are deeply divided on the issue of theology. To Mormons, voting for Evangelical candidates is routine. For Evangelicals, voting for a Mormon candidate is now seen as nearly heresy -- hence the reason Mormons may abandon the Republican party nominee in the upcoming November Presidential Elections.

Fred lawyered for a pro abortion lobby. He also strongly supported the legislation McCain pushed through. So, I'm not sure Fred wins the "most conservative" label for me.
But I do agree with your other points.
I hope Utah and Idaho vote Democratic. Then maybe the party will have to court the Mormons instead of dis them.
