If I were a Hillary supporter this would just kill me. To see the Associated Press declare that Obama was the nominee, right as voters are still choosing the candidate in the primaries in Montana and South Dakota and nobody has officially achieved the magic number. Add to that that superdelegates are notoriously fickle and their votes can't be really be counted until the convention in August.
Polling for the last couple days showed Hillary ahead by a huge number in South Dakota, and very competitive in Montana.
But when the press goes and writes a story, that everybody starts repeating, that Obama has already won the delegates he needs to win, that's obviously going to affect the races outcomes. Even though they have to use nominee preference information that superdelegates didn't want to make public, the AP wanted this story today and so they went ahead to make it happen. Why does the press do this? Because they can.
Though if they go ahead and call Obama the next President before the votes are cast and counted in November, that'll be too much. Don't expect they wouldn't try, after what you've seen today!
Rush Limbaugh said the MSM was going do whatever they can to pick the candidates for both parties, and gosh darn it, looks like they sure did.
UPDATE: Hillary has still managed to win South Dakota, but not by the margins that were expected.
