A good sign for Romney

Mitt Romney nabbed a prime GOP convention speaking spot scheduled the same night as the vice presidential pick yesterday, prompting a new wave of speculation the former Bay State governor could now become a running mate.

The nod comes a day after Romney again said it would be an “honor” to join Sen. John McCain’s ticket.

“I think any Republican in this country who was asked by the nominee of our party to be their running mate would consider it an enormous honor and would accept that and do it with pleasure and pride,” Romney told Sean Hannity on Fox Tuesday.

Romney will speak Wednesday, Sept. 3, the same night as McCain’s wife, Cindy, and another potential veep pick, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. Jindal, unlike Romney, has said he wouldn’t accept the No. 2 post.

Convention officials haven’t nailed down the time and order of the speakers, who are slated to run from 6:20 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. It still is a good sign for Romney, some Republicans said.

“It could very well be,” said Rep. Brad Jones (R-North Reading). “He’s been in contention for the VP spot for a while and he brings a lot to the table.”
