If McCain selected Mitt for his VP...

McCain’s announcement comes as his poll numbers slide over his perceived weakness on economic issues. The Arizona senator has called for the creation of an independent agency to further regulate the lending practices of the financial service industry, suggesting as potential committee members Mitt Romney, Warren Buffett and Michael Bloomberg.

Had John McCain selected Mitt Romney as his running mate, as I suggested last spring, his campaign might appear more competitive on economic issues. Nevertheless, McCain’s willingness to leave the campaign trail and work on the administration’s plan could pay political dividends if he can play a significant role in facilitating a solution.
