Removing Marriage from Public Discourse

I haven't posted for a while. I guess I am just trying to come to terms with the next four years (still trying...). As long as Mitt stays active in the public's eye, I will survive.

In my house, we don't get the newspapers anymore. However, in preparation to do our part in stimulating the economy on Black Friday, I got up early Thanksgiving morning and hit the nearby grocery store for the two main local papers and accompanying advertisments (maybe they should just sell the ads by themselves...). In doing so, not only was it apparent why we don't get the newspapers anymore but we were suprised at a new tactic against marriage. Consider this...

In a story of a two people opening their home to people on Thanksgiving, one of the couple, (Doug White) was referred to as the other's (Monique White) “longtime partner”. My wife thought it was odd that they were referred to as partners yet they had the same last name, maybe just a strange coincidence.
However, when looking at the second newspaper, there was a different version of the story. In this second one, the man is clearly described as the "husband".

On further investigation, my wife found similar articles (links below) about the couple with all references to their relationship described as "partners". Only in the one lone piece is there any indication that they are not only partners but married. I am generally ok with calling one's spouse their "partner". However, in these stories it seems a little too convienent given the politics surounding marriage these days.

Since the MSM can't have same sex marriage (at least not yet), their new tactic may be to just ignore that marriage exists at all. I guess I can't call my wife "my wife" anymore without offending someone. I should rewrite this post and refer to her only as my "longtime partner".

Very sad.

Story 1: -- "longtime partner"

Story 2: -- "longtime partner"

Story 3:-- "longtime partner"

Story 4:-- "husband"

What is wrong with these people? When I saw Rockmountainnews.com as the address, I instantly thought the only place liberal enough in the mountain west to call married people longtime partners that deliberately would be Colorado, namely the Denver area.

I wasn't disappointed.
