Republican Senator Judd Gregg of New Hampshire abruptly withdrew yesterday as President Obama's nominee to be commerce secretary, citing "irresolvable conflicts" on policies including the economic stimulus bill nearing final passage in Congress and how the next census will be conducted.Kevin Madden, a Washington-based Republican consultant who worked on Mitt Romney's presidential campaign last year, said Gregg's position "became increasingly difficult for somebody who has always earned a reputation as a fiscal conservative."
"There was an element of tokenism and pageantry in the overture to Gregg," Madden said, asserting that Obama "is not really interested in working with Republicans like Gregg to craft a bipartisan agenda."
