McConnell and fellow Republicans said that the aid comes at too steep a price, contains too much entitlement spending, doesn't do enough to help financially strapped homeowners and doesn't contain enough tax cuts - a provision Republicans see as vital to shoring up the private sector.
The three Northeastern senators [Specter, Snowe, Collins] have sided with Democrats on some social issues in the past, they hail from a region of the country where the GOP's legislative ranks have thinned significantly, and they represent many moderate to left-leaning voters in their home states. I seriously doubt that Obama's Porkulus Maximus bill will pull this country out of the serious recession we are in, but this much is certain. The Democrats:
1. Wrote this bill
2. Co-sponsored this bill
3. Passed this bill
4. Own this bill
If the attempt to stimulate the economy fails, Obama will be a one term President.
It's a shame that the three Yankee GOP couldn't vote no, at least on round one. They do come from more moderate-to-liberal states, and I do believe in representation. However, they should have voted NO. I also get annoyed when the left and media report that the GOP was against any stimulus. Simply not true. It was the pork projects, entitlements they were against. Remember -- in a welfare state, the first to go is always defense spending.
