The GOP Discovers a Winning Issue--Gitmo

We are constantly informed by the MSM that, just like former President Clinton, Barack Obama is "an immensely talented" politician...... Riiiiiiight!

The "immensely talented" Bill Clinton lost control of Congress to the Republicans for the first time in fifty years after just two brief years of his feckless "leadership" and the "immensely talented" Obama has chosen to attempt to close down Gitmo and move these murderous thugs into a jail near you, when polls show that 75% of Americans are opposed to moving the detainees to American soil.

John McCain found out during the course of his excellent adventure in co-sponsoring illegal alien amnesty bills, that when you get on the wrong side of 75% in an opinion poll, you are about to get your head added back to you on a silver platter.

I predict that Gitmo will be one of many political defeats that Obama will suffer and for the simple reason that the vast majority of Americans are in the middle of the political spectrum. We are not interested in endangering our communities by having terrorists in jails just down the road from where we and our children live and we are not willing to take on these liabilities in order to help Obama pay back his Leftist buddies for helping him get elected.

Those opposed to this hare-brained scheme are Democrats, Indys, Libertarisns, Greens and Republicans. When it comes to issues of national security, common sense trumps hard left dogma every time!

WASHINGTON -- President Obama's plan to close down the U.S. naval prison at Guantanamo Bay and move some of the most deadly terrorists in the world into the United States isn't going so well. Nervous House Democrats last week deleted his funding request for $81 million to close the prisoner-of-war camp, fearing a public backlash in their states and districts. Moreover, Republican leaders have turned the administration's idea into a lethal political weapon they have begun using against vulnerable House and Senate Democrats in preparations for the 2010 midterm elections.

The decision by Democratic leaders to drop Obama's money request was based on sound reasoning: Obama was closing the prison without a plan on where he would put what everyone agrees are very dangerous terrorists bent on killing as many Americans as they can. The White House is desperately looking for any states that are willing to house the so-called "detainees" in available prison sites, but it's getting few, if any, acceptable takers.

Democrats in droves are turning thumbs down to the idea of putting any of the Gitmo prisoners in their states, or even in the country.

John, why do you assume the terrorists will be in local jails? They may well be free men on our streets - and followed as well as possible and at great expense by the FBI. All so that they can rightfully enjoy the luxuries of living free in America that all innocent men are entitled to.

Anonymous,

I assume you are using satire to express your dismay that Taliban terrorists captured on the battlefield are "innocent."

Am I right in my assumption?

I will raise this point about the closing Gitmo argument...

It's plain out silly to try and single out Gitmo as the possible terrorist recruiting tool. Terrorists can make up and dictate whatever new demands which they can ask for us to appease on a given day. They can argue that it's our heavy binge drinkers, or our occupation of who knows where, or our saying Iran's president is wrong. The terrorists' ultimate recruiting tool is nothing other than showing that they're making progress in getting more and more demands met, because when we appease them, that's how they exert their power and get more recruits.

Does anyone consider what terrorists running suicide bombing trucks against a U.S. prison would do? I sure hope that the U.S. prison system would hold up, but it still gets a little scary as to what they could do. I hope that the structure holds up, and I hope anyone from U.S. serial killers to former Gitmo terrorists do not escape in such an event.

The whole idea that Gitmo is a recruiting tool worth singling out is rediculous. The terrorists can make up whatever demands that they wish, and keep adding more as we appease them. They have a large arsenal of so-called propaganda. The true recruiting tool out there is appeasement, which shows that the terrorists' cause is potentially winnable and worthwhile. While I don't agree with the Gitmo idea, I'm glad that most of our government does have it right when it comes to recognizing our genuine terrorist threat.
