It is the ingrained instinct of the US business and military establishment to treat the presidency with great respect. The spectacle of generals and chief executives in effect repudiating Donald Trump this week therefore shows the extent of their dismay at the morally equivocal position the president took on the far-right demonstrations and violence in Charlottesville. These are institutions that rarely speak out on domestic politics. But for leaders who deal with the reality of America’s diversity, silence in the face of Mr Trump’s inadequate response was not an option.
