Oh, come on. For every grain of economic credibility Mitt would have offered, an equal grain of economic elitism might have haunted Mitt--not clear that VP Mitt would have done what Palin is doing. Yes, it's not fair, but that's how it is.
ONE THE OTHER HAND, I think there may be a way of McCain using Mitt Romney, perhaps announcing him as Treasury or Commerce Secretary, that might be a net gain in this climate; that, and perhaps, Rudy for Homeland Security? I'll leave it to Team McCain to decide whether it's possible to walk this fine line can be walked successfully...

Announcing who will be his treasury and defense secretaries is unwise. It will lead media and people to focus on them than the candidate. And it will only magnify McCain's weakness because it will show he is desperate.
