Read about Lewis Gordon Pugh, a British explorer (and attorney) who braved sub-zero temperatures to become the first person to swim at the North Pole. He hopped into the freezing waters on Sunday to highlight the devastating impact of climate change on the natural world."I am obviously ecstatic to have succeeded but this swim is a triumph and a tragedy," the 37-year-old British lawyer said after coming out of the water.
"A triumph that I could swim in such ferocious conditions, but a tragedy that it's possible to swim at the North Pole."
"The decisions which they make over the next few years will determine the biodiversity of our world," he said.
"I want my children, and their children, to know that polar bears are still living in the Arctic — these creatures are on the front line up here."
I agree we've got a lot to do to clean up our act and the environment. However, while Pugh is swimming in the North Pole the Chinese and other developing nations are paying little to no attention. In fact, China is now the world's largest polluter.
This effort calls for a global effort--not just one in countries with a conscience on the subject. We also need a comprehensive alternative-energy, cut-back-on-the-oil plan. I've heard Mitt give a fine presentation on the topic.
