Growing Up Giuliani

This comes from Newsweek's COVER STORY: RUDY’S ROOTS.

Only a few quotes below. Read the entire thing here.

Rudy Giuliani was raised to understand that fine, blurry line between saint and sinner. The making of his moral code.

The real Rudy is probably as complex and certainly as passionate as the operatic Rudy who shows up at cop rallies.

The author is referencing Rudy's presence at a 1992 cop rally that spun out of control. Video even captures Giuliani "wildly gesticulating and shouting a profanity-laced diatribe against Dinkins" (first African-American mayor of NYC).

This is the former and "real" Rudy. His demeanor was deplorable. Not at all presidential material evident that day. Could you see Romney "wildly gesticulating" while "shouting a profanity-laced diatribe" against the mayor of NYC? Don't think so.

His appearance at the event and active participation therein helped him secure valuable informal backing of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, the policemen's union. This group helped him get elected mayor in 1993.

Back to the story:

The proximity of good and bad, even in Giuliani's own family, seems to have given rise to his inflexible public code but more relaxed personal one—a bifurcation that will only become more important in the next 10 weeks or so, as generally conservative Republican primary voters decide whether to trust this unconventional figure with their nomination.

He certainly was more relaxed--even immoral and out of control--in his personal life.

Just say no to Rudy. He shouldn't represent "generally conservative Republican voters" when he's never been one himself.
