Back in the peak of the 2008 cycle, I spoke with former Congressman Rick Lazio at one of Mitt's fundraisers and asked what kinds of plans he had for the future. He pointed to Mitt and said he only had one thing on his to-do list, and that was get Mitt Romney elected. Rick Lazio was of the fundraising co-chairs for Mitt in NY, and the fundraising team was incredibly effective in the Empire State, raising millions of dollars.
Lately there's been buzz in NY political circles that Lazio has been strongly considering a run for Governor. And now it's pretty much a done deal. Despite indications that Giuliani has been considering a run as well, he hasn't taken any official action and with a very weak Democrat governor in office, Rick knows the GOP needs to get the campaign started now if we're going to win.
Lazio was the headliner at a major Conservative party dinner in Rochester Friday, where the state Conservative chairman Mike Long made it very clear he would be the preferred candidate for the conservative party line in 2010.
Who knows if there will be a primary in NY next year? Regardless, I just want to remind folks who was there for Mitt from the beginning and let you know if you want to get involved in the Lazio campaign that you should be ready for the official announcement to come out soon.
